How do I know which Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan is right for me?

When choosing a Medicare Advantage plan, first see which type of plan you qualify for.

If you have both Medicare and full or partial Medicaid, you could qualify for a Dual Eligible Special Needs Plan (D-SNP). They usually offer better benefits and lower costs. Depending on your eligibility level, Medicaid may help cover:

  • Medicare premiums
  • Copays and coinsurance
  • Additional services not covered by Medicare alone

Medicare Advantage Dual Eligible Special Needs Plans (also called D-SNP): all-inclusive Part C plans with greater benefits and savings for those who have both Medicare and some form of government assistance program such as:

  • Medicaid
  • Medicare Savings Program
  • Medicare Extra Help (Low-Income Subsidy or LIS)
  • EPIC (Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage)

These Dual Eligible plans usually offer the most coverage with:

  • lower copays
  • low or no monthly premiums
  • higher OTC card allowances
  • low- or no-cost prescription drugs

If you are dual eligible, you could qualify for a Special Needs Plan that offers:

  • Coordinated Medicare and Medicaid benefits
  • Additional support services, including home care
  • Extra benefits beyond Original Medicare
