Know Your Risk for Diabetes

By Susan Beane, M.D., Vice President and Medical Director, Healthfirst
Many of us make New Year’s resolutions at this time of year. Some folks vow to lose weight, while others pledge to exercise more. The one resolution I’d like to recommend you make this year is to find out the level of your risk for diabetes.
Most people who develop Type 2 diabetes almost always have what we call prediabetes—blood glucose levels that are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. The main challenge with prediabetes is the frequent lack of warning signs or symptoms. This makes the case for determining your risk for diabetes all the more urgent, so that you can take immediate steps to lower your risk and to lead a longer, fuller life.
My organization is proud to partner with great community partners like the American Diabetes Association (ADA) to provide resources to fight the prevalence of diabetes in our communities. I’d highly recommend taking the Diabetes Risk Test offered on the ADA website. It’s a quick questionnaire that allows you to figure out your risk for type 2 diabetes.
Once you know your risk for diabetes, you can take charge of your health and decide what steps you want to take to lower your risk—quit smoking, increase physical activity, or eat more fruits and vegetables.
Diabetes is, sadly, one of the fastest-growing diseases in the world. My organization is excited to join forces with amazing community organizations to help educate and support our community. We are committed to offering long-term guidelines that encourage healthier lifestyles not only during November (Diabetes Awareness Month), but for a lifetime. So please take the first step and find out your risk for diabetes.
And mark your calendars for March 15, 2014 when Healthfirst and the American Diabetes Association of Greater New York present the ADA EXPO at Jacob Javits Center in New York City. For more information on the ADA EXPO, please visit the ADA of Greater New York website at www.diabetes.org/newyorkexpoand the Healthfirst website at healthfirst.org
