Join the Fiesta for Hispanic Heritage Month

By George Hulse, Vice President of External Affairs, Healthfirst
This month from September 15 to October 15 we take the time to reflect on the rich cultural history and tradition of Hispanics during Hispanic Heritage Month.
Hispanics have a large footprint in New York City. They make up the second-largest ethnic group and are 28 percent of the city’s 8.3 million population, according to 2010 Census data. This means that more than one in four New Yorkers is Hispanic. As of April 2010, the Hispanic population of the U.S. comes in at a whopping 50.5 million, which makes people of Hispanic origin the nation’s largest ethnic or race minority.
Hispanic Heritage Month got its start in 1968 when President Lyndon Johnson established the observation of Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968, which President Ronald Reagan expanded in 1988 to a month.
Each year this celebration begins on September 15, the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico, Chile, and Belize also celebrate their independence days during this period and Columbus Day (Día de la Raza) is October 12.
There will be many fun celebrations to commemorate Hispanic heritage this month. One in particular is the Univision Familia y Hogar Expo in New York City from September 21-22 at the Metropolitan Pavilion (123 W. 18th Street) in Manhattan, which my organization has been sponsoring for three years.
This popular fun-filled day features activities to educate and entertain you about Hispanic culture and business. There will be health screenings, beauty makeovers, fashion shows, crafts, financial seminars, and much more. One of the things I’m most excited for is the special fitness clinic led by Ary Nunez, an internationally renowned celebrity trainer and Nike-sponsored athlete. Come join the fun and help celebrate the richness of Hispanic heritage!
