Providing Training for Dementia Caregivers in New York City
NEW YORK, NY, May 14, 2018 – Healthfirst proudly announces an extended sponsorship with CaringKind to offer the Dementia Care Training for Caregivers Program. This training series will provide dementia care training to professional caregivers.
CaringKind, formerly known as the Alzheimer’s Association, New York City Chapter, has been NYC’s leading expert in Alzheimer’s and dementia care for more than three decades. Their nationally recognized Dementia Care Training for Professional Caregivers specifically aims to empower direct-care workers from a variety of settings to provide the highest quality of care to persons with dementia. This four-part training session will be offered to Healthfirst’s Licensed Home Care Service Agencies that are eligible for the Healthfirst Quality Incentive Program. This program is open to direct-care staff that provides hands-on care to individuals. The topics covered will include understanding the disease process, enhancing communication, creating meaningful activities, managing challenging behaviors, palliative care, person-centered care, home safety, family interactions, cultural awareness, elder abuse, and self-care.
“This partnership is significant to Healthfirst, as we celebrate 25 years of service. We aim to provide caregivers with the tools needed to improve the quality of life of our members and their families,” said Susan Beane, M.D., Healthfirst Vice President and Medical Director. “We are dedicated to improving the treatment options for Alzheimer’s and dementia by providing resources and patient-centered support services like the Dementia Care Training for Professional Caregivers.”
“In the absence of prevention or a cure, the best treatment for Alzheimer’s and dementia is good care. And, too often, professional caregivers have had little or no preparation to care for the Alzheimer’s community,” said Lou-Ellen Barkan, President and CEO of CaringKind. “Our Dementia Care Training for Professional Caregivers ensures that professional caregivers are educated and equipped with the specific knowledge needed to provide the best possible care to individuals with the disease and their families.”
