Prominent Medical Experts and Elected Officials Unite in the Bronx to Promote Family Health and Community Wellness
BRONX, NY, June 23, 2016 – Healthfirst and its community partners hosted their annual Health and Wellness Expo series on Saturday, June 18 at the Claremont Healthy Village at the Gouverneur Playground in the Bronx. This highly-anticipated summer event attracted thousands of attendees and generated heightened awareness on health matters related to the community.
“We have to take care of our health to get to our goals,” shared Keynote speaker Susan L. Taylor, Founder and CEO of National CARES Mentoring Movement and Editor-in-Chief Emerita, Essence Magazine. Taylor delivered a well-received message of building community wellness through self-care and resilience, as she convened the health panel breakfast at I.S. 219-New Venture School.
Top New York City health experts, including Keneca Boyce, PhD, Denny Chern-Kelk, DDS, Perry Frankel, MD, and Melba Taylor, MD lead an informative discussion on Family Health and Communities moderated by Susan Beane, MD, Healthfirst Vice President and Medical Director.
The Health and Wellness Expo continued into the afternoon at the Claremont Healthy Village at Gouverneur Playground. There were appearances by Assemblymember Michael Blake and local personalities. The community residents enjoyed the Health and Wellness Pavilion which featured free health screenings, prizes and giveaways, fresh smoothie samples, and fitness and Zumba workshops. The Kids Zone offered face painting and live entertainment from the New York Aquarium, Prospect Park Zoo, and the Brooklyn Museum.
Continuing Healthfirst’s longstanding commitment to identifying and responding to communities’ health needs in a proactive manner, the Expo’s mission is to create a premier health and wellness experience in an interactive, informative, and safe environment. This expo enables Healthfirst and our partner hospitals, corporations, and organizations to engage communities in health screenings and nutritional and exercise programs, educating them on the benefits of these partnerships.
